Master’s Thesis Defenses Conducted as Part of the Project!

On 10 July 2026, master’s thesis defenses were held as part of the activities of the Chmielarz Research Group, including the theses of students whose research was related to the LIDER XIV project and conducted under the supervision of the project leader, Prof. Dr. Izabela Zaborniak.

Dominik Jaworski, MSc Eng., defended his master’s thesis entitled “Sucrose-Core Branched Polymers in the Engineering of Modified Drug Delivery Systems.”

The aim of the thesis was to develop a synthesis protocol for statistical cationic sucrose-core branched copolymers using SARA ATRP (Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization with Supplemental Activator and Reducing Agent) and to investigate the effect of the initial monomer concentration on the kinetics of the polymerization process.

Natalia Tomasik, MSc Eng., defended her master’s thesis entitled “Synthesis of Ionic Polymer Carriers for Applications in Modified Release Systems of Model Active Substances.”

The aim of the thesis was to synthesize branched copolymers with a centrally located sucrose core and n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate units using the SARA ATRP technique. The obtained polymers were subsequently subjected to acid hydrolysis, yielding anionic polymers with potential applications in delayed-release systems for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The developed materials represent a potential alternative to commercially available linear polymers used in modified-release systems, such as polymeric excipients known under the trade name Eudragit®. Compared with conventional linear polymers, they exhibit a high degree of uniformity, as confirmed by their narrow molecular weight distributions, while their branched architecture may potentially improve the efficiency of active substance encapsulation.
